What is Psychosis? How IZR helps in the management of Psychosis?

Psychosis is a condition in which an individual’s information processing within the brain gets affected, which further leads toward the loss of contact with reality. In psychosis, the individual might experience hallucinations. Hallucinations mean seeing or hearing something unreal that has no actual existence, and normal people can’t see it or hear it. The individual also might experience delusions. Delusions mean beliefs that have no existence in reality.

Early Psychosis Signs & Symptoms:

Psychosis doesn’t start drastically, it occurs with gradual changes in one’s thinking pattern and perception about the world. There are few warning signs and symptoms of the early psychosis phase which might be noticed by an individual’s family or peers.

  • A sudden drop in educational/occupational performance
  • Difficulty in concentration
  • Feeling uneasy when around others
  • Having a suspicious feeling for others
  • Poor self-care and hygiene
  • Excessive emotional expression than the situation required
  • No emotions at all
  • Spending a lot of time alone than usual
  • Delusional beliefs; getting stuck to an unrealistic belief pattern
  • Difficulty paying attention
  • Sensing things that other people don’t

Signs and Symptoms of a Psychotic Episode:

In Psychotic episode, many of the above signs and symptoms can be noticed with severe;

  • Auditory hallucination: hearing unrealistic sounds in absence of people that can’t be heard by normal people.
  • Visual hallucination: seeing people or things that are not present there or seeing unrealistic things that do not exist.
  • Tactile hallucination: having unexplainable sensations or feelings.
  • Olfactory hallucination: sensing the smell of things that are not present there.
  • Gustatory hallucination: these hallucinations are rare ones, but one can experience them. In gustatory hallucinations, a person can sense the taste of things that are not present there.

Risk factors for Psychosis:

  • Genetics: A person may have genes of psychosis inherited from their ancestors, but that doesn’t mean all individuals having genes of psychosis must get psychosis. Their probability of getting psychosis is much higher as compared to individuals with no psychosis genes.
  • Trauma: Any traumatic event like the death of a family member, accident, war, and sexual abuse can lead an individual toward psychosis. Age factor and intensity of trauma may also play a role in it.
  • Illness or Brain Damage: Damage to the brain, brain tumors, and other physiological diseases like dementia, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, strokes and HIV can all triggers psychosis.
  • Drugs: Psychosis can be triggered by drug abuse. Triggers include alcohol abuse, and other drugs like Amphetamine and marijuana, etc. Drugs dramatically affect brain activity, so what seems to be real to an individual does not match with reality.

How IZR helps in the management of psychosis?:

At Innovative Zone Rehabilitation (IZR), experienced medical and professional psychologists are working hard to assist clients with mental health issues, substance addiction-related issues, and psychosis management.

A physician at IZR prescribes medications based on the client’s symptoms and conditions. They conduct daily checkups and, if necessary, adjust the dose and quantity of the medication given to clients based on their symptoms and conditions.

A team of psychologists provides psychotherapy and counselling to clients which are necessary along with medication for the management of psychosis. IZR provides numerous therapies to clients but some of the most common ones are CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy), SP (supportive psychotherapy), Psychoeducation, and FPS (family psychoeducation and support).
